Tag Archives: kabulThe first overland trips - How the legend started Monday, September 12, 2011 On Wednesday 29 April 1964 the 2 medically trained novice drivers, Woodman and Paul, made their way out of London to the docks to begin their journey to Kabul.
Their first problem arose even before leaving the country when they rolled to an unplanned stop. A lorry pulled up and the driver told them they’d run out of diesel. As none of the gauges worked properly on the dashboard they said they weren’t to know. The driver gave them a spare can of fuel, and told them they just had to bleed it through and they’d be rolling in no time. The only bleeding they understood about was in their medical world.
The driver stayed to help and asked where they were going. When they said Kabul, he stared up at the trailer with his mouth wide open and said ‘you’re f.....g mad’.
